During mentor: Pause- explain to the children that this will happen.

Problems geared to level 2. Push through to 3
(Year 8 curriculum level 4)
Use materials but don’t JUST use materials. If they can’t record, record for them.
Critical consciousness-every time they can’t, think why?
Creating questions around Cultures
*Strengths: eg Muslim-dates, Filipino-food
*Values and Beliefs
Pasifika values (see slide)- Contrast the views of society. Service is important to them.
‘We’ and ’us’.
Disagreeing/agreeing with the maths idea.
5 Productive Talk Moves (see slide)
-Could you repeat that?
-Could you ask someone else?

19 what? Use context, not just numbers.
You split them ….because…
Expect mathematical reasons.
Any questions? Get the children to ask the questions. If they don’t ask questions you can warn them that they must fully understand so one will have to re-explain if there are no questions.
Constant prompting
Group norms work as a family, families ask questions.
“Great question, that is going to clarify it for everyone.
Active listening- What did you have for breakfast? First listeners says a random answer. Next time has to ask 3 questions to get more information. Teach them to keep questioning.

Senior Lesson:
-½ class
-strength based social groupings (nurture/anxious etc buddy)
(Check out Gaye Williams for ‘groupings’)
-groups of four (try to avoid threes do 2’s or 4’s)
-one challenging task (if any of the students can solve it on their own it is not challenging enough)
-encourage recording and multiple representations
(Reading- ‘Blue Table’, Peter Lilijedahl-visibly random groups)
Timing:
10 mins warm up
5-10 mins Group norms/Launch
15 mins Small group
15 mins Large group discussion
10 mins connection

10 mins conceptual warm up eg
2 + 3 = 3 + 2
6 = 6
5 = 2 + 3
Quick images geometry eg sketch what you saw, what shapes do you see, look for the language of geometry, shapes, angles etc.
