Praise Barriers
 Praise is a learned teacher skills that needs lots of practise
 Child not used or comfortable with praise
 High teacher energy
 Interrupts flow of lesson
 Attention is often draw to the good kids
 Meaningless praise- non specific
 Missing poor behaviour as an antecedent then praising another behaviour
 Different expectations between teachers when team teaching

Why do some children need more praise and encouragement than others?
 Behaviour
 Some children can get own satisfaction
 Self image/esteem
 Ego-centric
 Some get praise at home/some don’t
 Praise their abilities to enhance what they can do already

Why do some students get/need praise more than other?
 Trouble makers- get back on task
 Personality driven- may not get a lot at home
 Role models- use them to set the tone
 Rectify behaviours- focus on positive rather than negative
 Acknowledge the quiet students- they fly under the radar as on task consistently

What is the value of teacher attention for children?
 Only attention they may get
 Feel valued/liked, want to be there
 Increases confidence and self esteem
 Confirms they are doing the right thing
 Safe environment
 Builds positive relationships
